Template vs. Custom Corporate E-Cards

When deciding how you want to approach you corporate e-card, you usually have two main options: customizing an existing template, or creating an entirely custom e-card from scratch. Below, we break down the differences between the two options, discussing the pros and cons for each.

Template Based E-Cards

Pros

Production Turnaround

One of the main pros for using a templated solution is the ability to produce the e-card and receive the finished product quickly. This can usually be accomplished within an hour for automated, basic templated e-card, to a few days for more complex, highly customizable offerings.

Price

Cost is substantially less than custom with prices ranging from $200 to $400 for static e-cards, and $400 to $2000 for dynamic animated e-cards. Most animation-only dynamic e-cards tend to be in the $400-800 range, while image-based reside in the $800+ range.

Cons

Creativity

This is the main con why some decide to go the custom route. While many templated solutions offer a fair amount of tweaking and customization, they do not offer full creative control or integration with other creative campaigns.

Custom E-Cards

Pros

Creativity

This is the main facet that drives companies toward the custom route. Custom e-cards allow for full creative control from concept to production, which allows you to create a genuinely unique, standout product. Custom e-cards can also allow you to seamlessly incorporate design elements from your current marketing or advertising campaigns. It can be a single graphic reflecting your branding, or a full-fledged interactive animated e-card. The sky’s the limit.

Cons

Price

But as I’m sure you can guess, this increase in control comes at a cost. Custom e-cards can become very pricey, depending on their length and complexity. Fully custom e-cards start around $3000 and can go into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Production Turnaround

Another downside of custom e-cards is that they can take a fairly long time to produce. Depending on length and complexity, developing the concept, going through rounds of revisions, and completing the final product can take anywhere from 4 weeks on the quick end, up to multiple months. In the end, the length of the project really depends on the time of year it is started (busy season or not), how dedicated you are to the project, and how complex the e-card is.
